The History of Gorky Park, Moscow

Located along the banks of the Moskva River, Gorky Park has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The area was previously a wasteland and waste heap, but after years of communist community work days, it was transformed into a beautiful park.

The First All-Russian Agricultural and Handicraft Industries Exhibition opened on this site in 1923, marking the beginning of Gorky Park's transformation. Initially, the area was covered with gardens, meadows, and vegetable plots belonging to neighboring estates. It wasn't until the 1920s that the surrounding area, including Neskuchny Garden, began to receive attention.

Neskuchny Garden has a history dating back to 1753, when it was created in the area between Kaluzhskaya Zastava and Trubetskoy Moskva river-side estate. The park was designed by Konstantin Melnikov, a renowned Soviet architect, and combined the extensive gardens of the old Golitsyn Hospital and Neskuchny Palace, covering an area of 300 acres along the river.

Gorky Park, located at Krymsky Val, opened in 1928, just across the Moskva River from Park Kultury Metro station. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and attractions within the park, including ponds, walking paths, and cultural events.
